The Centre for Architecture, Urbanism and Global Heritage at Nottingham Trent University hosted a four-day international workshop. In March 2020 the Nottingham Trent University research team travelled to Egypt to undertake fieldwork at the site of Hawara, alongside our partners at the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics. To keep up to date with the work undertaken by the Project see the Virtual Hawara 'Ongoing Work' section.
In March 2020 five piezometers were installed at the site of Hawara. The installation process was attended by Eng. Waad Allah Abul-Ela, Head of Projects Sector at the Ministry of Tourism; Mr. Al-Shura, Director General of Fayum Archaeology; Engineer Abdel-Alim Munseer, Engineering Consultant, Ministry of Antiquities; Muhammad Rajai Abdul Hakim, Inspector of Archaeology, Fayum; and LABYRINTH project partners the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG).
The piezometers have been installed to measure the level of subsurface water in the area. The measurements obtained will assist with the development of methods to reduce the level of subsurface water within the pyramid structure and the surrounding archaeological areas.
In this virtual workshop, hosted by NRAIG, members of the NTU and NRIAG research team will discuss the latest updates from the geophysical survey and digital modelling of the site of Hawara, alongside a discussion of the site's archaeology and legacy.

On Friday 22nd November 2020 the International Pharaoh's Race took place in Egypt. This year's race saw participants from a number of different countries undertake the 100km course, starting at the pyramid of Hawara in the Fayoum and ending at Saqqara in Giza. Now in its 20th year the race, which is reviving an ancient race used to train pharaonic troops, aims to highlight the history and archaeology of the area and promote tourism.
